Quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods, and when each fits.
Quantitative research measures and compares, and needs numbers and a design that controls for other explanations. Qualitative research explores meaning and experience, and needs rich data and transparent analysis. Mixed methods combines both when neither alone answers the question. Choose the method from the question, never the other way round.
